Designer Duro Olowu once told the Independent in London that his “job is not about dictating to women what they should wear, it’s about presenting them with beautiful options.” The selection Olowu presented for Spring ’13 was undeniably perfect. Olowu established himself in 2004 as a maestro of one-of-a-kind prints. The Nigerian-born designer was fearlessly mashing-up prints long before it became de rigueur in fashion.
Zac Posen’s elegant collection got off to a dramatic start with supermodel Naomi Campbell opening the show in an expertly cut feminine sweetheart-neck printed dress with a flippy hem. What followed was a string of ‘40s inspired romantic dresses in Posen’s signature corset bodice and jaw-dropping gowns replete with red-carpet trains and beautiful extras such as embroidery, chiffon, organza, tulle and pleating – which Posen has long proven himself to be a master of manipulating and mixing.
What will Marissa Webb’s debut collection look like? That had been the question on everyone’s lips since the former J.Crew head of women’s design left the company; which she had a hand in turning into a stylish powerhouse during her 11 years designing. Remember how we were singing the praises of the ankle-strap shoe? It’s only been the start of NYFW and from the looks of the Spring ‘13 runways, the ankle strap will continue to thrive. We’re not surprised since this versatile silhouette can complement every look.
