The Spring 2013 runways were full of an array of attention-grabbing shoes. High-impact heels, haute gladiator straps, cone heels, ornate wedges and the perennial staple, the stiletto heel, all came stomping down the runways. Designers’ new-season take on shoes involved re-imagining them in new silhouettes and dressing them up in special details. For instance, straps were an accent I was very excited to see many designers turn to for spring. Two of my strappy highlights were at Altuzarra and Alexander Wang.
Definitely not for the wallflower, the knee-high Gianvito Rossi for Altuzarra gladiator sandals (bellow) caught my, and just about everyone else’s, eye instantly. They’re so freaking cool, chic and utilitarian, and I love the crystal embellishment along the front. It adds a soft touch to this hard shoe. I can imagine it paired with classic pieces to keep the focus on the footwear. They have ability to to instantly restyle staples like pencil skirts, shirt dresses and tailored shorts.
Alexander Wang went the opposite direction and stripped away the details from his gladiator sandals (bellow) with only a few thin straps on the foot, ankle and right bellow the knee. I can definitely get on board with this minimalist gladiator sandal. I love that even though they’re no doubt a statement shoe, they’re also quietly alluring.
Although picking favorites from the parade of new shoes designers unveiled at NYFW wasn’t easy, here are some of my wish list favorites.
