What will Marissa Webb’s debut collection look like? That had been the question on everyone’s lips since the former J.Crew head of women’s design left the company; which she had a hand in turning into a stylish powerhouse during her 11 years designing. At the presentation for her debut collection for Spring ’13, the design markers Webb made famous at J.Crew, like slouchy separates in bright colors, unexpected layering, short suits and sequins, are still present. While it may have been inevitable that some of her signature touches for J.Crew would find themselves here, she offered up a new and fresh upscale interpretation. Webb’s strength lies in her ability to turn the dressy and preppy into nonchalant and ultra-cool. She explored hard and soft in the form of tough leather pants, silk bow-front blouses, leather full skirts with tulle underskirts and leather waistcoats layered over soft dresses. This flattering collection was chock-full of wearable tailored separates that women will want to own. We loved the flowy, easy update on the pantsuit with a V-neck tunic, the wide-leg and skinny trousers with bold prints on the outside of the leg and her vibrant strappy shoe collection (which we talked about here). Looks like J.Crew will have some stiff competition come next Spring.
